You can decide the name of my Sketchbook!

Hello everyone. How are you doing today? Sure ok that’s great now enough about you. Let’s talk about me now. After this entire journal is about me right? Exactly.

As most of you know (or should know) the Heroes con is this weekend and although I almost everything ready to go, I still need to name my sketchbook! That is why I turned to my fans (both of you) for ideas. I posted both here and on my deviantart that anyone who could think of an awesome name would receive a sketch from me either at the con or through the mail. You can only imagine the huge response I received (seriously you can only imagine it) but I did receive a couple of awesome ideas.

Now since I still have a few things to finish up before the con I don’t have time to decide so I want you (yes you) to let me know what name best fits my sketchbook. All you need to do is simply comment here or on my deviantart for the name that you like best. That’s it!

I would really appreciate it. Again just let me know which of the following names suits my sketchbook. Thanks.

    Hot Copic
Bitches ‘n Robots (but mostly bitches)
    Babes, Bots & Beasts
    McDoodles

Thanks everyone.

Hello hello everyone. I must confess I am up to my eyeballs (and I’m really tall mind you) with things I have to do for the upcoming Heroes con. That being said the tip for this week will be short and sweet.

Tip #4 Do a piece for a charity auction

Yeah yeah I know you are probably thinking how on earth can this help me land a freelance gig? The answer is quite simple actually, exposure. For example I had recently done a piece for a charity card auction that has ended up leading to two people contacting me for work.

I had seen the ad on craigslist and decided to send my stuff in just to see what would happen. I was accepted to be a part of the project, turned in my donation piece and over the course of the next 3 weeks I received two commission requests and a fan mail. Overall a pretty cool experience and yet another reason why you should consider doing a couple free gigs just so you can start getting you name out there.

Join me next time as I will have something clever to say (hopefully) along with the final 3 tips of top ten ways to lands a freelance art gig.

The best news you will read in the next 5 minutes

heroes6-12-09

The Heroes Comic Convention is next weekend (June 19-21) and it is shaping up to be a phenomenal convention this year. Two of my favorites Adam Hughes and Frank Cho will be there as well as both Marvel and DC comics. But the biggest news is that….are you ready? Make sure you’re sitting down.

I will be doing commissions and sketches at the Con this year.

I know incredible right? This is like finding out you can shit gold or something. Anyway I will be at SP-02 revealing secrets of the world, doing sketches, and selling prints along with my currently unnamed sketchbook.

Speaking of which if anyone here can come up with a really super awesome name let me know right here right now. If I pick your really super awesome name I will do a sketch for you or something along those lines. Sound good? Of course it does. Just try and have any names in by June 17th. The clock starts now.

In closing if your are going to be at the con I hope you will stop by and say hello, pick up a print, buy me a 1972 ‘cuda or a 22 year old Scarlett Johansson, your choice.

Anyway don’t forget to post some names for my sketchbook. I look forward to hearing what you come up with and hope to see you at the Heroes con.

See you on the other side, whatever that means.

We are now halfway through my top ten ways to land a freelance gig! The tip for today maybe short but is still very useful and could be the defining factor on landing a job. So let’s jump right into tip number 5.

TIP # 5: Special promotions

Remember when I suggested signing up for forums and creating a thread to showcase your work? Something else you can in addition to posting really kick ass art is to mention that you are running a special.

I know I know that may sound kind of silly, possibly even whorish. But remember you are selling yourself and sometimes in order to do so you have to make yourself more attractive to clients.

Now there are pros and cons to posting your actual rates, the pro being that the client will know exactly what to expect, however the con is that people will probably undercut you. Personally I don’t believe in posting you actual rates even if it is a special or promotion that you are running. I don’t advise this because odds are people would undercut. Think of it like you are playing poker; the last thing you want to do is show your hand to everyone at the table. This is an instance where I suggest you be paranoid. Very paranoid. Like the men in black are going to take me away in the night paranoid. Got it?

What you can do when running a promotion is to make your offer definite yet subjective. I have provided a sample below.

“Hello all just wanted to let you know I am running a week long special. All commissions will be half off. Please contact me for details.”

See what I did there? I put a time limit on it so that people will feel a sense of urgency, plus I included a really great deal of half-off and did so without divulging my rates. Also it should be noted that if you say you are having a half-off sale then have a half-off sale. Don’t be a cheesy bastard and charge your same rate. All that will do is most likely make people think you are overcharging to begin with plus over time people will find out and then you will be blacklisted.

Ok that does it for today’s tip. I will try and post another one tomorrow but no promises because it is the weekend and let’s face it. The world isn’t going to save itself.
