Jason McLellan’s Character Design How-To Part 2

robot_chick_ideas2

Ok everyone this is part 2 of a…uh…well I don’t really know how many total parts I am going to have yet so for now let’s just call this part two for now.

In part one, I gave a few tips on how to get character design work and I was also taking you through a freelance project that I am currently working on, leaving off with a rough initial sketch of the character. I turned that in and hoped prayed for the client to approve it. Keep in mind I wasn’t in love with the design and this was primarily done to get the ball rollin’. You will find that most of the time people know what they don’t want instead of knowing what they do want.

After turning this in the response was positive but the design was turned down. The client said it had too much of a Tron feel, which I totally see and was actually aware of when drawing it. But again this was to just get the ball rollin’. The client was also nice enough to send me a few reference photos of the direction he would like it to go. I prefer when people do this because it takes the guess work out of the project.

Don’t get me wrong I don’t want to simply redraw another design or something stupid like that. But if a client can supply photos of the direction they want, it really does help me know what they want. I usually catch on better with visuals than any other way. It isn’t because I’m a artist either, it’s because I can barely read. Hell, I cna braelyy typr.

Anyway above is what I will be sending out tonight. I meant to send these out earlier but I my truck has been trying to blow up. But nonetheless I will sending these out tonight and give you an update tomorrow in Part 3.
