Heroes Comic Con 2010 – Artists you should know

I know. I know. And I don’t even want to hear about it either. I haven’t updated the blog, I haven’t called, I haven’t been around blah blah blah. Well guess what? You’re not the center of the universe ok? I am! So if I don’t feel like posting, I’m not going to post. Get it?

Oh God. Where are you going?

Look I’m sorry I really am. I’ve uh….been drinking a lot lately. Yeah that’s it I’ve been…Dammit. You’re not buying that. Ok how about this then? I’m really lazy.

Wow you believed that a lot quicker than I hoped you would. Well…ummm….ok then. But either way I’m back now so let’s just live in the moment shall we?

The purpose of this post is to whore out my friends instead of myself for once.  See I’m a giver not a taker.  It’s just the way I am.  I’m being so sweet right now you would get a cavity from just looking at me.

So what has brought on this need for me to promote those other than myself? Why Heroes Con 2010 of course. You see I really didn’t think that I was going to make it to the con this year but I ended up being able to after all. Although I was totally not ready for it, I still had an absolute blast. I’m not going to rehash some of the con stories from my Deviantart blog entry.

Instead I’m just going to focus on the artists I met there who maybe lucky enough to call me a friend. And who knows maybe in time I may even allow them to call me by my first name instead of Mr. McLellan. Again I just can’t help myself…I’m a giver.

Now without further delay, below is a short list of five artists from this year’s con that I think you should follow and quite frankly worship.

The Great Loston Wallce. Loston is one of the most talented artist I have ever met. Loston not only has the ability to draw in multiple styles. but is also a hell of a teacher who doesn’t mind sharing his knowledge.  Loston has worked for both DC and Marvel comics and is rumored to be able to bend spoons with his mind. Pretty incredible.

Clever Jeremy Dale who has an incredibly clean and polished style breathes life into his creations. Jeremy’s style is in the same vain as the late great Mike “Ringo” Wieringo but still uniquely his own. Jeremy is one to keep your eye own because his talents will not be ignored for long. Jeremy and his lovely wife Kelly (who is a pretty mean inker) are a dynamic duo of sorts and can be found kicking ass and taking names at most cons.

Sassy Danielle Soloud. Obviously Danielle is a great artist (she wouldn’t be on my this list if she wasn’t) but in my opinion Danielle’s greatest talent lies in her ability to inject a little of herself into her art. Danielle is an instantly likeable person and this bleeds into her art. Her characters possess a charm and quirkiness, which pulls the viewer into their world. Danielle has definitely found a nitch with her lively versions of popular characters but her own weekly webcomic “Life with Death” is where she really shines.

Workhorse Bryan Fowler is probably the most dedicated artist I’ve even known. Bryan loves the technique and the craft of creating artwork, he loves getting his hands dirty and is a sponge ready to absorb all that he can methods and techniques. Bryan’s persistence and voracious appetitite for understanding artistic processes and theories has made him a well-rounded artist set on the path of success.

True Original Henry Eudy is truly a free thinking, honest and funny artist whose style transports the viewer into another time and place. Henry’s art is unapologetic and transcends labels. He is indie without being pretentious, he is a social commentator without being preachy, he has an offbeat style that you can identify with, in short Henry is a indie artist whose humor is sure to win you over.

Ok folks that is my list of artists from this year’s Heroes convention 2010 that I think you should follow and worship. Each brings something unique to the table, yet I’m sure you will find that you will love each and everyone.

Or else.

Sean Connery Speed Paint

I put this together rather quickly last night. Even though I have had a lot on my mind lately, I do find that doing a speed paint is welcomed distraction. I have probably just over an hour invested in the piece above. I first did a rough drawing with a blue line pencil, scanned it in and then ‘painted” over it in Photoshop.

I was doing a speed paint at least once a week but unfortunately got out of the habit, but as you can see I’m trying to remedy that. I think I’m just going to draw everyone on my list of people that I can have a “get out of marriage for free card”. Last week was Scarlett (who is of course number 1 on my list) so this week I decided to do number 4 on my list.

Sir Sean Connery.

Now I feel it prudent to stress the fact that I’m not gay. But let’s face it. Sean Connery is the fucking Man. He is the end all be all of cool.

End of story.

So for that reason alone he makes my list as number 4. Be sure to check in next week for another speed paint installment of  “People that I would leave my lovely wife for” or just subscribe to my blog and automatically receive all my blog updates.

A Weird Spot & Figure Drawing Sessions

I’ll admit guys and girls (rawr), I’m in a weird state of mind right now. Long story short my dad is going to hospital today to find out if he has lung cancer. Fun fun. We had hoped to get the results yesterday but there was a miscommunication at the hospital. And by miscommunication I mean the hospital didn’t know what the hell they were talking about. Let’s hope this isn’t a ongoing trend.

So yeah, all of that really has me in a weird state of mind, even though my father and I are complete opposites in also every possible way, he’s still my dad so this really frikkin’ sucks. But as of right now no one knows anything for sure so hopefully the initial reaction to the CAT scan will end up simply being an overreaction.

I honestly don’t mean to dump on everyone or bring anyone down. I know that many of you out there have had loved ones go through a battle with cancer. It’s a scary thing to experience second-hand so I can only imagine how it must feel to be in that person’s shoes.

Oops. What was I saying about bringing everyone down? Good Lord why don’t I lighten to mood with some puppy mill horror stories or back alley abortions? I think the best thing to do is just too stay positive and strong for those who need it most. Ok, so happy thoughts, happy thoughts going to my happy place.

Hey I know wanna see some figure drawing sketches that I actually decided to scan for once? Huh? Do you? Of course you do!

The sketch above and the others below were all done at the Charlotte Art League, which hosts a weekly figure drawing session from 8:30 – 10:30 am. The cost is a mere $10. So if you are in the Charlotte area I highly suggest that you stop by and take advantage of this great class. All you need is $10, some paper and a pencil. But my weapons of choice are copic markers, microns, and a little bit of luck. I hope to see you there and until next time I will see you on the other side…whatever that means.

Blue Line Pro Charity Sketchcards for Cancer

I feel really bad for not posting this sooner because it would’ve been good for some of you guys to jump on board for this but I didn’t so I suck. I know. I’ve heard it all before. But recently this means a even more to me because my mom had a recent battle with cancer and now my dad may have lung cancer. I should find for sure later today.

Above are the 4 sketch cards I did for Blueline’s upcoming auction for Cancer. Just did 4 basic headshots so yeah I did cheese out there (I suck remember) but all in all I like the way these cards turned out. I know that in the grand scheme of things doing a sketch card is just a drop in the bucket but at least its a drop in the bucket. You know what I mean?

If you want to participate or bid on a card  please visit Bill Nichols’ site.

Scarlett Johansson Studies

I did a couple quick semi-quick studies of my #1 celebrity crush Scarlett Johansson Monday night. Nothing major just trying to capture her heart…er… ahaha. Did I say heart? Silly me I meant likeness. But primarily I did it as a value study. Nothing really all that special but I’ve been  in an art slump lately and this is the first thing that I’ve liked in a while. Plus I told myself that I would start posing more studies and doodles. I have a ton of stuff just lying around that I really need to scan and share.

So the process for this one was I first did a pencil rendering then scanned it in and “redrew it” in Photoshop. Oh how I wish I could do transitions and even tones in traditional media as I do in Photoshop. Anyway let me know what you think. Thanks!
